Chapter 25 - Audrey and I nearly stop speaking

The hardest family conflict after Lenora went to custody was not with Lenora.
It was Audrey.
I could not stop thinking about her email:
Does he know?
Then:
Fine. Just keep me out of the accounting.
She had known enough to ask.
Then chosen comfort.
We argued in my kitchen.
“You used my dead son’s benefit capacity.”
“I didn’t know his name was on it.”
“You knew Mom was using my allocation.”
“I thought she had authority.”
“You asked whether I knew.”
Audrey started crying.
“I was afraid if I challenged her, she’d cut Lucas off.”
There.
The same mechanism.
Money as obedience.
Lenora had trained both of us differently.
I avoided conflict.
Audrey complied for benefits.
Then our children paid.
I said:
“You let Mom make Lucas dependent on her.”
Audrey answered:
“And you let her stay close to Etta after the things she said about boys for years.”
That hit.
Because it was true.
Neither of us got clean hands by pointing.
We did not reconcile that night.
We left angry.
But the next week she sent me:
Every remaining family-benefit record she had.
No deletions.
May you like
No excuses.
Trust would return through behavior or not at all.
