Chapter 7 - Clarissa’s version of family

Clarissa came from old money.
Not billionaire mythology.
Her late husband had built a regional insurance brokerage, and she inherited substantial investments after his death.
Estimated net worth:
Around $18 million.
Dorian was her only child.
For years she treated inheritance like weather.
Always present.
Always capable of changing.
When Dorian changed jobs:
“Think about what happens to the family assets.”
When we bought our house:
“Don’t overextend. Your future is already secure.”
When I chose not to use the obstetrician Clarissa preferred:
“I would hate for family support to become complicated.”
She rarely said:
I will disinherit you.
She did not need to.
Dorian understood.
Then pregnancy.
Her behavior intensified.
Names.
She wanted:
Charles Hale IV
if boy.
We were having a girl.
Clarissa said:
“We can try again.”
I laughed because I thought she was joking.
She was not.
She told Dorian:
“A daughter is lovely. The next child matters more for continuity.”
I asked him to shut it down.
He said:
“She’s from another generation.”
Excuse number one.
Then nursery.
Clarissa wanted it at her house.
I refused.
Dorian said:
“She just wants to help.”
Excuse number two.

Then she told me to leave after delivery.
By then there were no excuses left.
