Chapter 12 - The pediatric feeding specialist

Dr. Mercer referred us to a pediatric feeding specialist.
Not because Benson had an eating disorder.
Because after repeated food-removal incidents, he became anxious at meals.
He asked:
“If I cry, do I lose dinner?”
He started eating too fast.
Then hiding crackers in a toy bin.
Not because he had ever been starved for days.
Because unpredictability creates fear.
The specialist recommended:
Regular meal and snack schedule.
Neutral presentation of food.
No using food access as punishment.
No forcing bites.
No demanding emotional composure as price of eating.
Clear non-food consequences for behavior.
Simple.
Boring.
