Chapter 15 - Sabine’s Choice

Sabine became uncomfortable with being called brave.
She said:
“I waited.”
That was true.
She saw Cordelia move the place card at 6:20.
She objected lightly.
Then backed down.
Why?
“Because she was Cordelia Hartwell.”
“What does that mean?”
Sabine gave me a look.
“You know exactly what it means.”
I did.
My mother did not need to threaten.
People anticipated displeasing her.
Sabine told herself:
Maybe there is another accessible spot.
Maybe Bram’s parents approved.
Maybe the photographer asked.
Then she saw Cordelia physically pushing Bram’s chair.
That removed ambiguity.
She brought the seating chart.
Later she gave us the schedule.
Sabine said:
“I wish I’d said more at six in the morning.”
Elowen answered:
“You said something when it mattered.”
Both statements could be true.

We did not turn Sabine into a hero to excuse everyone else.
We also did not punish her for taking time to understand what she was seeing.
