Chapter 19 - Cordelia Loses the Camera

My mother had controlled family photography for decades.

After the wedding, we stopped giving her that role.

Not as punishment theater.

Boundary.

At Thanksgiving, no assigned family portrait.

People took pictures if they wanted.

At Christmas, Cordelia asked:

“When are we doing the card?”

I answered:

“We aren’t.”

Her face fell.

“You always send one.”

“We’re sending individual photos this year.”

“Of what?”

“Whatever people choose.”

She looked genuinely lost.

Control can become identity.

Without it, she did not know what her function was.

That was hers to solve.

Eventually she started bringing food instead.

Her pies were excellent.
