Chapter 8 - North & Main

The magazine editor called the next day.
Her name was Priya Sloan.
She sounded mortified.
“Mr. Hartwell, we did not request the exclusion of mobility devices.”
“Your schedule says otherwise.”
“Our schedule doesn’t.”
She sent the original.
Different.
Authentic family interactions.
Full family group if participants consent.
Accessibility equipment should remain naturally present.
Do not reposition subjects in ways that compromise safety or comfort.
I stared.
Cordelia had rewritten the shoot notes.
The magazine’s photographer had received only a broad brief.
The document Sabine found had been produced internally by Hartwell House Brand Studio.
Why?
Priya explained that Cordelia had proposed using the wedding weekend as background for a feature announcing the relaunch of Hartwell House as a luxury private-events destination.
Historic elegance.
Modern family stewardship.
Generational continuity.
My mother wanted the feature.
The magazine had not promised publication.
It was exploratory.
Cordelia treated it like a campaign.
Priya said:
“We specifically avoid staging disability out of lifestyle coverage.”
That sentence made me feel relieved and worse simultaneously.

My mother could not blame an editor.
She had invented the standard herself.
