Chapter 16 - Richard’s Failure

Richard became my unexpected ally.
Not hero.
Important difference.
He had his own failure.
He knew Greg had become secretive about money.
Two years earlier Greg asked whether he could:
“borrow against future equity”
in the LLC house.
Richard said no.
“There is no future equity unless I choose to sell.”
Greg became angry.
Richard should have asked:
“What does Audrey think?”
He did not.
Why?
“He’s an adult.”
True.
Then:
“I assumed his marriage finances were his business.”
Also true.
But when property Richard owned became part of Greg’s deception, that distance became convenient.
Richard admitted:
“I liked not knowing.”
There.
Because confronting Greg might reveal problems requiring action.
He also admitted the house arrangement created hierarchy.
Greg could always say:
“My parents are letting us live here.”
Even while I paid.
That affected marriage.
Richard had not intended it.
Still.
He changed family policy.
Any family member living in LLC property received written lease/license stating:
Ownership.
Payment terms.
No equity unless separate written agreement.
Boring paperwork.

Good.
