Chapter 19 - Divorce Accounting

Divorce took fourteen months.
Not because we fought about custody constantly.
Money.
Forensic accountant reconstructed:
My housing contributions.
Actual property expenses.
Greg’s brokerage transfers.
Joint household expenditures.
Children’s account restoration.
Marital debt.
No simple:
He owes Audrey every dollar she ever transferred.
Marriage is not a commercial contract.
Some money supported our household.
Some was marital.
Some clearly dissipated for nonmarital purposes.
The negotiated settlement credited me for a substantial portion of Greg’s concealed investment losses and unauthorized transfers.
Greg retained his remaining brokerage account.
I received larger share of joint cash and retirement balancing assets.
No house equity because neither of us owned house.
Painful.
But legally clear.
Children’s UTMA accounts remained separate and fully restored.
No criminal prosecution for the fake mortgage story.
No forgery.
No false lender.
The UTMA misuse was referred? Our attorneys resolved through restitution and custodian change; no prosecutor pursued separate criminal case after full repayment and absence of prior misconduct.
Not every moral theft becomes a criminal conviction.
Greg hated phrase:
“financial abuse.”
I used it in therapy.
Priya preferred:
“financial deception.”
Labels mattered less than facts.
He lied.
I made financial decisions based on lies.

Marriage ended.
