Chapter 9 - Eleanor

My mother-in-law did not slap me.
Did not take the children’s money.
Did not lie about the mortgage.
But she had spent years feeding the hierarchy.
She told Chloe:
“You are my only daughter. Never let marriage make Greg forget his family.”
She told Greg before our wedding:
“A wife joins the family. She doesn’t replace it.”
On its face?
Reasonable.
In practice:
Chloe’s needs were framed as family.
Mine as spouse preference.
Eleanor knew the house belonged to the LLC.
She did not know Greg told me we were purchasing it.
When Richard confronted her after dinner:
“Did you know Audrey thinks they own that house?”
Eleanor said:
“Of course they know it’s ours.”
They.
No.
Greg knew.
I did not.
Then she asked:
“Why would Audrey pay a mortgage to us?”
Exactly.
Once she understood, she became angry at Greg.
Not immediately supportive of me.
Both can happen.
Her first instinct:
Protect family reputation.
“Can we settle this privately?”
I answered:
“The children’s accounts will be restored formally.”
“Of course.”
“And divorce discovery will include house payments.”
Her face tightened.
“Do you need divorce?”
There.
Still protecting structure over truth.
I said:
“I need information before I decide what I need.”

That was the last time I let her accelerate my decision.
