Chapter 21 - Eleanor Learns to Ask

Eleanor’s apology took longer because she had not committed one dramatic act.
Her harm was culture.
Harder to own.
She eventually wrote:
I taught Chloe and Greg that loyalty to family meant defending us even when we were wrong.
There.
Then:
I treated you as someone who joined our family rather than someone who formed a new family with Greg.
There.
Then:
I did not know about the children’s money or the false mortgage, but I created an environment where Greg believed hiding conflict was better than confronting us.
Maybe partly.
Not all his fault shifted to mother.
Then:
I am sorry I asked whether divorce was necessary before asking what you needed to feel safe.
That mattered.
Eleanor became careful with grandchildren.
Not afraid.
Careful.
At dinner:
“Can I cut Noah’s food?”
Ask.
“Can Sophie stay another hour?”
Ask.
No more:
Grandma decided.
Family culture changed through verbs.
Ask.
Wait.
May you like
Accept.
