Chapter 8 - Why Chloe Slapped Me

This question mattered separately.

Money did not explain the dinner slap.

Chloe had not learned about the UTMA source yet.

Her behavior came from something older.

Hierarchy.

The Bennett family had rules nobody admitted were rules.

Richard carved turkey.

Eleanor sat at head when Richard traveled.

Chloe organized anniversaries.

Greg paid restaurant deposits.

Children waited.

Spouses adapted.

At major family dinners, Richard and Eleanor were served first.

Not evil.

A tradition.

I had never cared.

At our house, I did not follow it strictly.

That anniversary night, Noah asked for potatoes.

I reached.

Chloe interpreted:

Audrey is serving herself before Mom and Dad at their anniversary dinner.

Would a normal adult say:

“Wait, let them go first”?

Yes.

Chloe slapped me.

Why?

Because she had spent years treating me as an outsider who refused family rules.

I had kept my career after Sophie’s birth.

Did not ask Eleanor to host my baby shower.

Sent Noah to a school Chloe disliked.

Declined a Bennett family vacation because Sophie had camp.

Small independence.

Chloe called it:

“audacity.”

She later told police:

“I reacted impulsively because she was disrespecting my parents.”

No one believed that justified physical contact.

But it explained:

Know your place.

Place meant:

You married in.

You do not outrank blood.

The irony of Greg using our children’s money to buy her necklace deepened it.

Chloe believed blood gave rank.

Greg treated his children’s money as available to maintain sibling bond.

Same family instinct.

Blood first.

Spouse adjusts.

Children cannot object.

Richard had finally become horrified by what that culture produced.
