Chapter 26 - Who Reaches First

The symbolic moment happened at dinner.
Of course.
Three years after the anniversary disaster.
My townhouse.
Small dining room.
Nothing catered.
Pasta.
Salad.
Garlic bread.
Sophie was nine.
Noah seven.
Greg had dropped them off after his weekend.
Richard and Eleanor were visiting because Sophie wanted Grandpa to see a school project.
Even Chloe stopped by briefly with a birthday card for Noah.
I almost did not notice when it happened.
Bread basket in center.
Sophie reached first.
Then froze.
Her hand stopped above it.
I saw the old memory cross her face.
Not terror.
Habit.
She looked at Eleanor.
Eleanor looked confused.
Then understood.
“Take the bread, honey.”
Sophie hesitated.
“Before Grandpa?”
Richard said:
“If you make me wait for garlic bread, we’ll have a real family crisis.”
She laughed.
Took a piece.
No one slapped anyone.
No one spoke about place.
No one ranked blood.
No one needed to make a speech.
Then Noah reached for two.
I said:
“One first.”
He groaned.
Healthy parental oppression.
The meal continued.
That was the climax.
Not money restored.
Not deed.
Not court.
