Chapter 1 - Don’t Drink It

My name is Ethan Cole.

I was fifty-nine years old when my six-year-old daughter knocked a cup of tea out of my hand and accused my wife of tampering with it.

It happened at 3:17 on a Thursday afternoon.

I remember the time because the grandfather clock in our dining room had just begun its quarter-hour chime when Lily screamed.

Our house was large enough that most noises died before they reached another room.

Her voice did not.

“Daddy, don’t drink it!”

I was sitting at the dark walnut dining table.

Late afternoon light came through the glass walls overlooking the garden.

A porcelain cup was halfway to my mouth.

Nora sat several feet away.

Cream silk blouse.

Dark trousers.

Diamond earrings.

Perfect hair.

Perfect posture.

Perfect calm.

Until Lily entered.

My daughter ran through the doorway so quickly one shoe almost came off.

Pale blue cardigan.

Floral dress.

Hair loose behind her.

Tears already in her eyes.

“Daddy!”

I lowered the cup.

“What?”

Nora stood immediately.

“Lily.”

Something in her voice made me look at her.

Not anger.

Warning.

She grabbed Lily from behind.

Not violently at first.

Around the shoulders.

“Sweetheart, calm down.”

Lily screamed.

“No!”

She twisted.

Kicked.

Pulled free.

Then ran directly at me.

I had no idea what was happening.

“Lily—”

She struck the cup from my hand.

Porcelain shattered against polished marble.

Tea spread across the floor.

Then began to foam.

Not ordinary bubbles from impact.

A pale froth formed along part of the spill.

A faint vapor lifted above it.

I stood so quickly my chair scraped backward.

“What the hell…”

Lily moved in front of me.

Both arms spread slightly.

A six-year-old trying to shield a grown man twice her height.

Nora stopped several feet away.

Her face had changed.

Not much.

Enough.

Lily pointed at her.

Her hand trembled.

“She made it for you.”

My eyes moved slowly toward my wife.

Nora swallowed.

“Ethan, she’s confused.”

I looked at the spill.

Then at the broken cup.

Then back at Nora.

Lily grabbed my hand.

Tight.

I heard myself become calm.

The colder I became, the more frightened Nora looked.

“Nora…”

She took one step backward.

May you like

“Ethan, listen to me.”

“Don’t move.”
