The answer was not that she was secretly poor.
She was wealthy before marrying me.

Three years earlier, Nora placed a large portion of her independent assets into a private luxury-development project introduced by an old friend.
The project collapsed.
Not illegal.
Bad investment.
Nora lost millions.
She hid it.

Fear of appearing dependent.

She had borrowed additional money against assets to invest further after the first losses began.
Classic escalation.
