Chapter 26 - Tea

For nearly two years, I stopped drinking tea.
Coffee only.
Then coffee began tasting like punishment because I did not even like it.
One rainy Sunday, Lily was eight.
She asked:
“Why you never drink tea?”
I answered:
“Bad memory.”
She understood immediately.
Then:
“Can I make safe tea?”
My whole body tightened.
I almost said no.
Instead:
“We can make it together.”
Together.
We boiled water.
Opened a sealed tea packet.
Used a clean cup.
Nothing ceremonial.
No testing kits.
No paranoia.
Just father and daughter in a kitchen.
Lily took one sip of hers.
Made a face.
“This tastes like leaves.”
“That is unfortunately the concept.”
She switched to hot chocolate.
I drank the tea.
May you like
It tasted ordinary.
That was a victory.
