Chapter 18 - The Main Truth — My Illness Had Become Their Calendar

The main truth did not arrive with a single confession.

It arrived through dates.

October 18.

I became ill.

October 19.

Adrian entered.

A painting left for “condition photography.”

A replica returned four days later.

December 7.

I became ill.

December 8.

Adrian entered.

A bronze left for “conservation.”

Substitute returned.

February 11.

I became ill.

February 12.

Two works moved.

May 15.

Lily stopped the tea.

A transport appointment had already been scheduled for the following morning.

That was the detail that ended any remaining doubt about coincidence.

Security had a request from Nora:

Adrian Vale — 8:30 a.m. access. Gallery conservation transfer.

I was supposed to be sick on May 16.

The transport was already arranged.

Nora’s scheme did not require my death.

Death would have created chaos.

Police.

Executors.

Insurance scrutiny.

Immediate inventory.

Terrible for them.

Illness was better.

Temporary.

Private.

Explainable.

She needed me alive enough for the household to remain normal.

Sick enough not to interfere.

That was colder to me than a single impulsive attack.

My suffering had become scheduling infrastructure.

My pain was on their calendar.
