Chapter 11 - The Man Inside Whitmore Meridian

Our CFO was named Peter Lang.

Fifty-six.

Worked for me nineteen years.

I trusted him.

Investigators initially focused on him.

He had approved release of two disputed payment batches.

Peter looked physically ill when confronted.

“I approved the batch.”

“Why?”

“Because legal had cleared vendor documentation.”

Legal had not.

At least not the actual legal department.

An internal workflow account showed approval from:

J. Mercer.

Jonathan Mercer.

Deputy general counsel.

Except Jonathan was in Singapore when the approval occurred.

He denied doing it.

Authentication records showed his credentials were used from an internal executive network.

Not his device.

Someone inside the building had used an authorized workstation while his session remained active.

Sloppy security.

Potentially intentional misuse.

Who had access to that executive floor?

Several people.

Including Vanessa.

Because I had added her to my personal visitor clearance.

My own decision returned again.
