Chapter 26 - I Almost Married Again

Four years later, I met someone.
Her name was Rebecca Sloan.
No relation to anyone involved.
Sixty-one.
Widowed.
Museum trustee.
Sharp enough to make me irritated and calm enough to find that amusing.
We dated.
Slowly.
Claire interrogated her.
Rebecca enjoyed it.
Noah, now seven, asked:
“Are you Grandpa’s girlfriend?”
Rebecca said:
“Apparently.”
He accepted.
I never proposed.
Not because Vanessa ruined marriage.
Because Rebecca and I eventually decided neither of us wanted to reorganize our lives around a legal ceremony.
We remained together anyway.
People asked:
“Are you afraid to marry again?”
No.
I was finally old enough to stop treating marriage as proof that a relationship mattered.
