Chapter 5 - Why Noah Had the USB

Claire confronted Vanessa privately.

Mistake.

Understandable.

Vanessa initially smiled.

“Those are Richard’s transactions.”

“No.”

“You run a charity, Claire. Not acquisitions.”

“My father froze Harborstone.”

Vanessa stopped smiling.

Claire said:

“I’m calling him.”

Vanessa stepped between her and the door.

Then Marcus entered from the adjoining suite.

That was the moment Claire became afraid.

She had already copied several files from the family-office dashboard and her phone photographs onto a USB using the laptop she carried for foundation work.

Why a USB in 2026?

Because Claire was paranoid about preserving originals when dealing with corporate documents.

For once, I was grateful.

Marcus told her:

“You’re misunderstanding normal closing activity.”

Claire answered:

“Then move.”

Vanessa took Claire’s phone.

Claire tried to grab it back.

Vanessa slapped her.

Hard enough to leave the mark I later saw.

Noah was in the adjoining dressing room with a hotel nanny.

He heard his mother cry out.

Came running.

Claire saw him.

Saw Vanessa.

Saw Marcus.

Then made one fast decision.

She crouched.

Put the USB in Noah’s hand.

“Take this to Grandpa.”

Noah nodded.

Vanessa was arguing with Claire.

Marcus was trying to delete something from the laptop.

Neither noticed a three-year-old walk out.

That was their mistake.
