Chapter 12 - Samuel’s Question

Samuel visited me the day after the ruined wedding.

He brought coffee.

No sympathy speech.

He asked:

“Why did Vanessa have access to your office?”

“She lived with me.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

I looked at him.

He continued.

“Why did she have access to corporate files at home?”

“Because I work at home.”

“Why were scanned transaction packages stored locally?”

“Convenience.”

He nodded.

Then:

“So this isn’t only about Vanessa.”

I hated him too.

Friends earn that privilege.

Samuel spent forty years in commercial banking.

He understood controls.

“You built a company where everyone thinks you see everything.”

“I do see everything.”

“No. You receive summaries.”

That landed.

“You also built a house where people assume anything near you is authorized.”

Vanessa entered my office.

Nobody questioned.

Vanessa called treasury.

People returned the call.

Vanessa introduced Marcus.

Meetings happened.

My authority extended around me like a shadow.

They used the shadow.
