Chapter 15 - EVELYN AND RUBY

The girls saw each other again before Claudia and I became comfortable in the same room.
Children are inconvenient that way.
Ruby was six.
Evelyn twelve.
Family Christmas.
Evelyn sat on the floor drawing beside the tree.
Ruby watched.
Then asked:
“Draw my garden?”
Evelyn looked at me.
I did not answer for Ruby.
She said:
“Sure.”
She drew the greenhouse.
Ruby.
Flowers.
Thomas in the background.
No Claudia.
No me.
Then Ruby asked:
“Where Mom?”
Evelyn paused.
“How do you want her?”
Ruby pointed above the greenhouse.
“Not angel. Just there.”
Evelyn drew a woman standing near the door.
Ruby approved.

That picture hung in Ruby’s room for years.
No one used it in foundation materials.
