Chapter 18 - MY DAUGHTER QUITS GARDENING

Ruby stopped gardening at eleven.
This delighted me.
Not because I disliked flowers.
Because everybody assumed she would become Emilia.
She did not.
She became obsessed with astronomy.
The memorial garden remained.
Thomas maintained basic soil.
Ruby visited occasionally.
Then one spring she said:
“Can someone else use it?”
My chest tightened irrationally.
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“Vegetables maybe.”
There.
The grief object released voluntarily.
The estate created a rotating children’s garden schedule.
No memorial exclusivity.
Ruby kept one small pot of Emilia’s salvia on our home terrace.

Enough.
Her mother’s memory did not require acreage.
