Chapter 26 - RUBY’S DAUGHTER

Ruby became a mother at thirty-eight.
Her daughter’s name was Emilia Grace.
Named after her mother, but not assigned her life.
At four, Emilia Grace loved bugs.
Not flowers.
She dug holes looking for beetles.
One afternoon at Villa Ventresca she uprooted a small ornamental plant by accident while searching beneath it.
Everyone froze because families remember strange things.
Ruby looked at the plant.
Then at her daughter.
“What happened?”
“Bug.”
“Did you pull this?”
“Yes.”
“Okay. We fix what we can.”
No one screamed.
No one invoked Grandma Claudia.
No one turned a plant into proof of character.
They replanted it.
It died anyway.
May you like
Ruby bought another.
Life.
