Chapter 9 - THE FILE CALLED SUCCESSION

Nicholas found the file on Claudia’s foundation laptop after the board authorized an internal review of program records.
Not secret hacking.
Preserved organizational files.
Folder name:
SUCCESSION.
My first reaction was too dramatic.
There was no legal succession.
Inside:
presentation plans;
donor talking points;
Evelyn photographs;
school materials;
proposed program renaming;
and a three-year “family engagement strategy.”
Year One:
Claudia continues Emilia’s work.
Year Two:
Evelyn positioned as youth ambassador.
Year Three:
Evelyn co-branded with Emilia story; transition toward “next generation stewardship.”
Then:
Ruby participation to remain personal/family until old enough for structured role.
At first that sounded almost thoughtful.
Then another note:
Avoid premature Ruby association with core program brand; creates automatic heiress narrative.
There.
Claudia was consciously managing my daughter away from her mother’s public work.
Not because Ruby needed involvement.
Because Claudia feared other people would see her as heir.
Then the most important page.
DONOR SITE VISIT — OBJECTIVES.
Demonstrate authentic youth participation.
Show Evelyn’s continuity.
Confirm estate garden remains available to program.
Secure Merrick renewal before independent governance restructure.
Formalize Evelyn ambassador designation.
Independent governance restructure.
Again.
The Ventresca Foundation was scheduled to eliminate family-controlled advisory committees at year-end.
A board reform I had supported after conflicts elsewhere.
Once effective, Claudia’s advisory chair would disappear.
Program management would move fully to professional staff.
Evelyn’s unofficial ambassador title would disappear unless staff independently retained some youth role.
Claudia had six months.
She wanted the Merrick renewal, the rebrand, and Evelyn’s status locked socially before her own authority ended.
There.
Fresh power.
Not ownership.
Narrative control.
Then one line made everything worse:
Garden inspection must occur after reallocation from Ruby. Evelyn needs continuous visual association.
Reallocation from Ruby.
Planned.
The flowers were not destroyed in a spontaneous tantrum alone.
Claudia had already decided the bed needed to stop looking like Ruby’s.
Did she plan to rip the flowers out violently?
No evidence.
She could have ordered gardeners to transplant them.
Thomas had refused without authorization.
Ruby happened to be there when Claudia came to do it herself.
The cruelty was spontaneous.

The objective was not.
Chapter Ten would explain what Claudia thought she was saving before the foundation reforms took the program out of her hands.
