Chapter 10 - What Maude really did

The hospital did not secretly kidnap Evelyn.
The transfer error was accidental.
Maude did something more opportunistic.
She found the error before I did.
Then she weaponized it.
The complete chain was confirmed by:
Hospital transfer logs.
Blood-type records.
Caroline West’s corrected pathology file.
Renwick transport manifests.
Payment records.
Recovery-residence intake notes.
Evelyn’s contemporaneous statements.
Messages preserved by her legal-aid attorney.
And later, Maude’s own emails.
The sequence:
First:
St. Vincent evacuation staff accidentally assigned Evelyn’s transfer code to Caroline West.
Second:
Caroline died.
The death was recorded under Evelyn’s identity.
Third:
The actual Evelyn arrived at Mercy East as unidentified Jane Doe 17.
Fourth:
Renwick Medical Transit noticed duplicate code during billing reconciliation.
Fifth:
Maude learned Evelyn was alive.
Sixth:
Instead of notifying me, hospital administrators, or police, she went to Evelyn.
She told her:
I knew.
I was furious.
I believed Evelyn had dragged Halstead companies into a financial scandal.
Seventh:
Maude arranged a private recovery residence under the claim that Evelyn needed security.
Eighth:
She used real emergency-service payments and invented the story of an investigation to make isolation believable.
Ninth:
After Finley was born, she told Evelyn I had rejected both of them.
Tenth:
She allowed the incorrect death record to remain uncorrected.
Then years.
The lie became easier to maintain because everyone acted according to it.
I mourned Evelyn.
Evelyn feared me.
Finley grew up without me.
Maude occasionally checked whether Evelyn was still far away.
No trust theft.
No inheritance amendment.
No custody scheme.
No hidden corporate takeover.
One medical identity error.
May you like
One woman who discovered it.
And seven years of choosing not to tell the truth.
