Chapter 6 - Why Evelyn did not come home

Evelyn delivered Finley six weeks later.
Premature but healthy.
Birth certificate:
Evelyn Shaw.
Why Shaw?
The recovery residence connected her with a legal-aid service after she said returning to the Halstead name might expose her to danger.
She adopted her maternal grandmother’s surname.
Legally.
No forged identity.
No witness protection program.
No federal conspiracy.
She simply lived under another lawful name.
Then why believe I hated her for years?
Because Maude continued contact.
At first monthly.
Then less.
Messages delivered through intermediaries.
Supposed updates from me.
One:
Merrick considers Evelyn dead for legal and family purposes.
False.
Another:
Do not bring the child into Halstead territory.
False.
Another:
If you contact him directly, the financial case reopens.
No such case.
Did Evelyn never search?
She did.
But my public life helped the lie.
After her “death,” I became colder.
More private.
Rumors said I had moved on immediately.
False.
I wore my wedding ring for two years.
But photographs eventually showed me at events with women.
Business.
Family.
Gossip became evidence in Evelyn’s mind.
Then Maude.
She positioned herself as reluctant messenger.
“I’m trying to keep both of you safe.”
The oldest manipulation in the world.
