Chapter 24 - Caroline’s mother meets Evelyn

Caroline West’s mother asked to meet Evelyn.

I thought it might be unbearable.

Evelyn agreed.

They sat in a quiet room.

Caroline’s mother looked at her for a long time.

Then:

“My daughter was buried under your name.”

“Yes.”

“And you lived under another.”

“Yes.”

Neither woman caused it.

Yet their identities had been entangled for seven years.

Caroline’s mother gave Evelyn a photograph.

Caroline.

Pregnant.

Smiling.

“She was excited about her baby.”

The baby had died too.

Evelyn cried.

No grand speech.

Then later she said:

“I spent years thinking my life was stolen from me. Her life actually ended.”
