Chapter 20 - The verdict

Maude went to trial after plea negotiations failed.

The prosecution proved:

She knew Evelyn survived.

She materially misrepresented my position to Evelyn.

She misused corporate resources to sustain separation.

She caused false communications and financial records to support deception.

She interfered with efforts to correct identity records.

She unlawfully confined Finley in coatroom and later threatened Evelyn.

The jury convicted:

Felony fraud/coercive-deception count under applicable state law.

Identity/records-related offense.

Misuse of entrusted funds/resources.

Misdemeanor unlawful restraint of Finley.

Threat/intimidation count.

They acquitted:

One broader conspiracy count involving Renwick executives because evidence did not prove family-wide agreement.

One kidnapping count prosecutors had charged in alternative theory? Better avoid if not already. We said stronger charges not kidnapping. So no.

They also acquitted one financial count where specific corporate payment could have been legitimate emergency expense.
