Chapter 5 - Evelyn believed I abandoned her

Evelyn’s statement from seven years earlier existed in the sealed file.

Not a prophecy.

Not a secret confession.

A routine intake statement from a recovery residence.

She wrote:

My husband has not contacted me. I was told he knows I survived and refuses to come.

I read it twice.

Then:

A representative from his family said he believes I caused the attack at St. Vincent and has instructed me to stay away until the legal situation is resolved.

There had been no attack.

No accusation against Evelyn.

Then:

I was told returning to the city may result in Merrick being arrested because financial transfers connected to my medical care are being investigated as money laundering.

That was nonsense.

But plausible enough to a traumatized woman who had survived an explosion, emergency surgery, and two days unconscious.

Who told her?

She named:

“Maude R.”

Thomas looked at me.

May you like

“Maude Renwick.”

I already knew.
