Chapter 11 - Evelyn comes forward

Evelyn did not walk into my mansion immediately.
She contacted police through an attorney.

After seven years believing I might be dangerous, she did not trust one photograph or one child’s mission to undo everything.
Finley had left without her permission?
Partly.
She had told him where to find me if anything happened.
He overheard an argument between Evelyn and a man watching their house.
Then ran.
That man?
Private investigator hired by Maude after Evelyn requested old hospital records.
He claimed he was only monitoring.
No threat proven.
Still alarming.
Evelyn reported.
Police arranged a controlled meeting at a government office.
I entered.
She sat at a table.
Alive.
Forty now.
Thinner.
Hair shorter.
A faint surgical scar near her temple.
I stopped.
She stood.
Neither of us moved closer.
Then she said:
“You buried someone.”
“Yes.”
“Did you know it wasn’t me?”
“No.”
May you like
She closed her eyes.
Seven years collapsed into one answer.
