Chapter 2 - The Heat in the Marble

The master bathroom was larger than most high-end apartment living rooms, clad floor-to-ceiling in gray-veined Italian marble. But as soon as Martha stepped through the doorway, the environment changed dramatically.
Heavy, thick steam hovered in the air like a dense tropical fog. Moisture beaded on the gold fixtures and ran down the polished mirror in long, clear tears. The air was suffocatingly hot, carrying the faint, metallic scent of heated bath salts.
Through the mist, Martha saw him.
Maxwell Rourke sat inside a massive deep-soaking therapeutic bathtub built into the center of the room. Even sitting down, immersed in hot water, his physical presence was overwhelming. He possessed broad, muscular shoulders, thick dark wavy hair damp with sweat, and subtle, dark tattoos creeping up his neck and across his collarbones. Light dark stubble outlined his sharp, handsome jawline.
His piercing blue-gray eyes locked onto Martha the second she crossed the threshold. The look in his eyes was cold, calculating, and intensely intimidating. He sat perfectly still, his powerful arms resting on the granite edges of the tub, his lower body hidden beneath the cloudy water.
Martha kept her head down, carrying the stack of crisp towels toward the vanity cabinet beside the tub. But as she drew closer, the heat radiating off the water struck her face like an oven door opening.
She blinked, her former nursing instincts flaring to life instantly.
Therapeutic baths for patients diagnosed with complete chest-down paralysis were strictly regulated. High temperatures were dangerous; a patient who couldn’t feel thermal sensations below their level of injury could suffer severe tissue burns or dangerous spikes in blood pressure without knowing it.
Yet this water was practically boiling.
Martha set the towels down on the marble counter. Instinct took over. Without thinking, she reached out and brushed the surface of the bathwater with the sensitive skin on the inside of her wrist.
The heat was sharp and stinging.
She pulled her hand back instantly, a small, involuntary gasp escaping her lips.
In the tub, Maxwell didn't move a muscle, but his sharp eyes narrowed. The irritation in his posture was palpable, a dark, dangerous tension radiating from him into the steamy room.
Martha turned to him, her compassionate nature instantly overriding Evelyn’s strict warning.

"This water is too hot," Martha said, her tone filled with genuine concern.
Maxwell didn't speak. His face remained an impenetrable mask of cold confidence, but his eyes followed her every move with hawkish precision.
