Chapter 49 - Ashes to Ashes

When Agent Harris and his tactical teams breached the drydock, the firefight was already over. Silas Vane and his remaining men had surrendered under the overwhelming force of Interpol's arrival.

Maxwell emerged from the rusted submarine, covered in grease and blood, limping slightly. Martha met him at the bottom of the gangway, pulling him into a fierce, desperate embrace, not caring about the blood or the rain.

Harris approached them, taking in the carnage of the basin. He looked at Maxwell, his face grim. "Where is Victor?"

"Inside," Maxwell said flatly. "He didn't make it."

Harris studied Maxwell’s face for a long time. He didn't ask for details. He didn't ask for a confession. He simply nodded slowly.

"We recovered Vane's servers from the trucks," Harris said quietly. "We have the Black Tide's entire ledger. You handed us the biggest organized crime bust of the decade, Max. Again."

"Then we're even," Maxwell said, leaning heavily on Martha.

Harris sighed, looking around the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers. "It's not that simple, Max. The people Vane worked for... the cartels, the syndicates... they will know you were responsible for this. Victor was right about one thing. As long as Thomas and Elena Rossi exist, you will be hunted."

"So what do we do?" Martha asked, her voice tight with exhaustion. "We ran. We hid. We fought. What else is there?"

Harris pulled a thick Manila folder from his trench coat. "I can't offer you witness protection. The syndicates have moles in the program. But I can offer you a permanent erasure. A complete scrubbing of your biometrics, your financial history, your very existence from every database on earth. You will be legally, undeniably dead. But it means you can never, ever return to the world. You will have no money, no names, no past."

Maxwell looked at Martha. He saw the same bone-deep weariness he felt in his own soul. They had billions of dollars in the bank, but it had brought them nothing but blood and fire.

"Do it," Maxwell said without hesitation.

"There's a coast guard cutter waiting offshore," Harris said, handing them the folder. "It will take you to a drop point in the Atlantic. From there, you're on your own. Good luck, ghosts."

They didn't look back. Maxwell and Martha walked past the police barricades, past the flashing lights, and vanished into the rolling sea fog.
