Chapter 37 - The Alpine Ghost

They didn't stop running until they were halfway across Europe. Using the chaos of the massive data leak, they slipped through the continent on forged passports, tracking a GPS locator Maxwell had managed to slip into Croft's coat pocket during the brief standoff in the office.
The signal led them to the icy, unforgiving peaks of the Swiss Alps.
Croft's fallback position was a remote, brutalist concrete chalet carved directly into the side of a glacier, accessible only by a single funicular railway or a treacherous helicopter flight. It was a villain's fortress, surrounded by sheer drops and freezing winds that howled like dying animals.
Maxwell and Martha crouched in the snow on a ridge a mile away, wrapped in white winter camouflage, looking through high-powered thermal binoculars.
"Four exterior guards. Rotating patrols every fifteen minutes," Martha said, her breath pluming in the freezing air. "Thermal shows at least ten more inside. The funicular is disabled. He’s locked himself in."
"He's waiting for an extraction team," Maxwell deduced, adjusting his scope. "If he gets on a chopper, he disappears to a non-extradition country, and he'll spend the rest of his life sending assassins after us."
Martha lowered her binoculars and looked at Maxwell. The cold had painted her cheeks a pale red, and snowflakes clung to her eyelashes. Despite the freezing temperature and the imminent danger, Maxwell felt a sudden, profound warmth welling up in his chest.
"This is it, isn't it?" Martha asked softly. "The end of the line. We either stop him here, or we run forever."
Maxwell reached over, pulling off his heavy tactical glove to cup her cheek. Her skin was freezing, but she leaned into his touch. "I'm not running anymore, Martha. I spent six months trapped in my own body, waiting to die. I won't spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder. But I won't ask you to come down there with me. You've done enough. You saved me."
Martha smiled, a fierce, beautiful expression that defied the icy wasteland around them. "Where you go, I go, Max. We started this in the dark. We're going to finish it in the snow."

Maxwell kissed her, a deep, desperate promise sealed in the freezing Alpine air. When they pulled apart, their eyes were locked, filled with an unspoken vow to survive.
They loaded their weapons, checking the actions, the metallic clacks muffled by the howling wind. They began their descent down the glacier, two ghosts in the snow, moving silently toward the concrete fortress.
