Chapter 31 - The White Room

The sterile, blinding fluorescence of the Interpol safe house was a jarring contrast to the soot and blood that had painted the longest night of Maxwell’s life. They had been flown via a silent, unmarked tactical helicopter to a secure facility just outside of Geneva, far from the smoking crater of the Vance estate. For three days, their world consisted of gray walls, lukewarm coffee in styrofoam cups, and endless waves of interrogations.

Agent Harris sat across from them behind a heavy steel table, his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. The data Arthur Vance had sacrificed his life to transmit was a labyrinth of international corruption, and Interpol was drowning in the sheer volume of it. Warrants were being executed in twenty different countries. Politicians were resigning; maritime executives were fleeing in the dead of night, only to be intercepted by armed tactical teams at private airstrips.

"Your brother was thorough, I'll give him that," Harris sighed, rubbing his temples as he slid a thick Manila folder across the metal table. "But your father was a genius. The encryption keys he embedded in the final upload locked Victor's associates out of their own offshore accounts. We have seized over four billion dollars in illegal assets. The Vance maritime empire is effectively dissolved. The board is in custody."

Maxwell stared at the folder, feeling a strange, hollow detachment. His ribs ached beneath the fresh bandages, a dull throb that reminded him he was alive. He reached out, his hand wrapping over Martha's beneath the table. Her fingers intertwined with his instantly, anchoring him to reality.

"What happens to us now?" Martha asked, her voice quiet but entirely steady. She wore plain gray sweatpants and a standard-issue Interpol hoodie, yet she carried herself with a quiet, unbreakable dignity that commanded the room.

"You are cleared of all charges," Harris said softly. "The surveillance footage from the subterranean servers proved Evelyn and Victor were the aggressors. You acted in self-defense. Furthermore, we found a secondary, isolated trust hidden deep in your father's personal legal files. A contingency plan. It seems Arthur knew the empire was too corrupted to save. He liquidated his clean, personal assets years ago and placed them in an untraceable blind trust under a new name."

Harris handed Maxwell a sealed envelope. "The Vance name is toxic now. But your father wanted you to survive it. There are new passports in there. A new identity. A sizable, perfectly legal sum of money. Where you go from here is entirely up to you."

Maxwell took the envelope, the heavy parchment feeling like a physical weight in his hands. It was freedom. It was a blank slate bought with his father’s blood. He looked at Martha, seeing the exhaustion in her eyes, but also the dawn of a fragile, beautiful hope.

"We leave tonight," Maxwell said, his voice finding its old authority, not as a ruthless CEO, but as a man who had finally woken up. "And we disappear."
