Chapter 27 - The Ascendancy

The ventilation shaft was a narrow, vertical tunnel of ridged aluminum, stretching endlessly upward into the darkness. Rungs of cold steel were bolted to the side, slippery with condensation and the grease of heavy machinery.

Maxwell climbed like a machine, his grief sublimated into a cold, diamond-hard focus. Martha was right behind him, keeping pace, her breath echoing loudly in the enclosed space.

Below them, the sound of tearing metal echoed up the shaft. Victor and his last remaining operative were tearing the server room apart, realizing their empire had just been globally exposed.

"He's going to come after us," Martha gasped, pausing for a second to catch her breath. "He has nothing left to lose."

"He won't climb the shaft," Maxwell said, his voice flat and dead. "He'll take the private elevator to the roof. He knows this shaft leads to the helipad. He'll be waiting for us."

They climbed for what felt like hours, their muscles screaming in agony. The air grew thinner, and the metallic tang of the ventilation system was replaced by the smell of rain and ozone. The storm was still raging outside.

Suddenly, a massive, structural rumble shook the entire shaft.

"What was that?" Martha cried out, clinging to the rungs as the metal vibrated violently.

"The charges in the mansion above the catacombs," Maxwell deduced. "The fire has spread to the structural supports. The house is collapsing into the tunnels."

A wave of intense heat washed up from the bottom of the shaft, followed by an updraft of thick, acrid black smoke. The server room had caught fire, and the ventilation shaft was acting as a chimney.

"Climb faster!" Maxwell yelled, coughing as the smoke began to burn his eyes and lungs.

They scrambled up the last fifty feet in a desperate frenzy, the smoke thickening into a suffocating blanket. Above them, the heavy steel grate of the roof exit was visible, backlit by the intermittent flashes of lightning.

Maxwell reached the top, planting his feet on the rungs and throwing his entire shoulder into the grate. It shrieked in protest, rusted in place. He hit it again, his muscles tearing, coughing violently as the smoke filled his lungs.

"Together!" Martha yelled, climbing up right beneath him and pressing her hands against the iron grid.

With a final, desperate heave, the grate gave way, flying off its hinges and clattering onto the concrete of the roof. Rain immediately poured down into the shaft, washing the smoke away.

Maxwell hauled himself over the edge, turning to grab Martha by the arms and pulling her up onto the rain-slicked roof of the Vance estate.
