Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Shadows

Maxwell did not answer.

He didn't yell. He didn't deny it. Instead, his piercing eyes broke contact with hers and darted instantly toward the heavy mahogany door leading out to the hallway. He was listening, checking the silence of the corridor with the practiced paranoia of a man hunted in his own home.

Finding no sound outside, his gaze moved slowly back to Martha.

There was no anger in his eyes now—only a sharp, calculating intelligence that seemed to measure whether Martha was a threat or an asset.

Before either of them could speak, Martha stepped toward the medical cabinet built into the wall to fetch a drying towel.

The cabinet was filled with prescribed medical bottles, antiseptic rinses, and specialized gauze, all labeled neatly under Dr. Adrian Cole’s official medical letterhead. But as Martha reached for a fresh towel stacked near the back of the shelf, her fingers bumped against something small tucked behind a heavy bottle of rubbing alcohol.

Curious, she moved the alcohol bottle aside.

Hidden completely out of line of sight sat a small, glass vial. It had no prescription label, no pharmaceutical branding, and no patient name—only a hand-drawn red mark across its rubber stopper.

Martha picked it up, holding it up to the dim light. The fluid inside was clear, slightly viscous, and completely unmarked.

She turned around, holding the tiny vial in her hand.

Maxwell stared at the glass container. For the first time since she had entered the room, his expression showed genuine, utter confusion. He looked at the vial, then up at Martha, clearly seeing the object for the very first time.

Suddenly, the brass handle of the bathroom door jiggled. The heavy wood groaned as someone began turning the latch from the hallway.

Martha’s eyes widened as she looked toward the opening door.

Maxwell leaned forward in the water, his voice dropping to a low, commanding whisper that cut through the steam like a blade.

"Hide that."
