Chapter 39 - The Architect of Ruin

"It's over, Julian," Maxwell said, his voice echoing in the ruined atrium. "The chopper is gone. Your men are dead or surrendered. You have nowhere left to run."

Croft turned around, his chest heaving, his silver hair disheveled. He looked at the gun pointed at his chest and let out a bitter, defeated laugh.

"You think killing me changes anything, Maxwell?" Croft spat, gripping his titanium briefcase like a shield. "I built the system. I wrote the rules your father and brother played by. You Vance men always thought you were the kings of the world, but you were just the muscle. I was the brain. If you kill me, someone else will just take my place. The money demands it."

"I don't care about the money," Maxwell said, stepping closer, the barrel of his gun unwavering. "And I don't care about the system. I care that you ordered a hit on my family. You manipulated my brother's weakness. You funded Evelyn’s poison. You are the architect of my misery, and tonight, your firm goes bankrupt."

"I have money, Max!" Croft pleaded, his arrogance finally cracking, revealing the pathetic coward beneath. "Billions! Hidden in cold storage wallets. I'll give you all of it! You can disappear forever! You and the girl can live like kings!"

Maxwell stared at the man, feeling an overwhelming sense of disgust. This was the monster that had caused so much pain. This pathetic, groveling creature was the phantom that had haunted his nightmares.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door to the atrium hissed open. Martha stepped through, covered in snow, her sniper rifle slung over her shoulder, her pistol drawn. She looked like an avenging angel of winter.

She walked up to stand beside Maxwell, her eyes locked on Croft with absolute contempt.

"He's offering us billions, Martha," Maxwell said, his tone entirely flat.

"I prefer the quiet," Martha replied coldly.

Croft backed up against the jammed elevator doors, his hands raised in a final, desperate gesture. "Wait! Please! I—"

Maxwell didn't shoot him. He lowered his gun.

Croft blinked, a sudden spark of hope igniting in his eyes. "You... you're letting me live?"

"I'm not a murderer, Julian," Maxwell said, pulling a heavy pair of tactical zip-ties from his belt and throwing them at Croft's feet. "Bind your own hands."

Croft hurriedly complied, binding his wrists, sobbing in relief.

Maxwell walked over, picked up the titanium briefcase, and pulled a small, flashing beacon from his pocket. He set it on the floor next to Croft.

"What is that?" Croft stammered.

"An Interpol emergency transponder," Maxwell said, tapping a button on his watch. "Agent Harris is leading a strike team less than ten miles from here. They just received the signal. The avalanche blocked the roof, but they'll dig you out in a few hours. I left a complete, decrypted copy of your operations on the terminal in Mayfair. They have everything, Julian. You're going to spend the rest of your life in a supermax prison, listening to the ocean you used to rule."

Croft’s face contorted in absolute horror. Prison, for a man of his stature, was a fate far worse than a bullet. "No! Kill me! Max, please, just kill me!"

Maxwell turned his back on the screaming billionaire, taking Martha's hand.

They walked out of the atrium, stepping back into the freezing Alpine storm, leaving the Architect of their nightmares trapped in his concrete tomb, screaming into the void.
