Chapter 22 - Descent into Darkness

The silence inside the vault was deafening, broken only by the ragged, adrenaline-fueled breathing of the three survivors and the muffled, distant thuds of the collapsing library above them.
"Emergency lighting," Arthur commanded to the empty air.
A row of amber LED strips flickered to life along the floor, revealing that they were not in a simple safe, but inside a spacious industrial freight elevator. The walls were lined with rows of tactical gear, medical supplies, and racks of servers humming quietly in the background.
"Are you hit?" Maxwell asked, scrambling to his knees and reaching for Martha.
"I'm okay," Martha gasped, wiping a streak of plaster dust and blood from her forehead. She gripped her pistol tightly, her eyes wide as she looked at the old man in the wheelchair. "You're... you're Arthur Vance."
"And you are the only reason my son is alive," Arthur said, giving her a curt, respectful nod. He pushed a lever on his armrest, and the elevator jolted before beginning a rapid, stomach-dropping descent deep into the bedrock beneath the estate.
Maxwell stood slowly, his mind struggling to process the impossible reality before him. "Fifteen years. We buried an empty casket. You let me believe you were dead. You let Victor run the board."
"I had no choice, Max," Arthur said, his voice heavy with the crushing weight of a decade's regret. "Victor sabotaged my helicopter. When I dragged myself from the wreckage, half-burned and paralyzed, I realized the extent of his rot. He hadn't just corrupted the board; he had bought the authorities, Interpol agents, our own security teams. If I had returned, he would have simply finished the job, and he would have killed you, too."
"He poisoned me anyway!" Maxwell yelled, the suppressed trauma of the last six months boiling over into rage. "I was trapped in my own body, watching Evelyn and Cole plan my murder!"
"And I was trapped behind the mirrors, watching them do it," Arthur countered softly, his eyes glistening in the amber light. "Do you know what it took for me not to break through the glass and strangle them with my bare hands? But I needed Victor to expose his funding network. I needed the transactions between him and the Zurich accounts. I have it all now on a localized server down here. But when Cole moved the timeline up tonight, I had to act."
The elevator ground to a halt with a heavy metallic clank. The doors slid open to reveal a damp, cavernous tunnel lined with old brickwork and thick bundles of fiber-optic cables. It was a remnant of the Prohibition-era smuggling tunnels the Vance ancestors had used to build their initial fortune.
"Where does this lead?" Martha asked, stepping cautiously into the damp chill of the catacombs.

"To the subterranean server farm," Arthur replied, his wheelchair navigating effortlessly over the smooth concrete track laid down the center of the tunnel. "And beyond that, to the cliffs. We need to reach the terminal, upload the decrypted ledgers to a global network of journalists and the loyal board members, and burn Victor's empire to ash. Only then can we leave."
"We're not the only ones down here," Maxwell said grimly, picking up a heavy tactical rifle from the elevator's weapons rack and tossing a spare magazine to Martha. He racked the bolt, the metallic clack echoing down the dark corridor. "Victor knows these tunnels exist. He won't let us reach that server."
