Chapter 59 - Cleansing the Meridian

The summit of Paso Los Libertadores stood in eerie, frozen silence. The howling wind whipped across the rusty girders of the border outpost, sounding like the lament of the damned.

The helicopter's cockpit was crushed. The pilot was dead over the controls.

Maxwell and Martha walked side by side through the knee-deep drifts, weapons raised. Two surviving mercenaries crawled from the side door, but Martha fired two precise rounds into their shoulders, neutralizing them instantly.

Then, Julian Croft emerged.

The aristocratic titan who had pulled the strings of the Vance dynasty was a ruined husk. His tailored coat was shredded and soaked in aviation fuel. His silver hair was matted with blood from a head wound. Yet, in his eyes burned the unhinged hubris of a man who believed himself a god.

In his hand, he clutched a reinforced titanium case.

"You really are an unkillable cockroach, Maxwell," Croft laughed, a pathetic, rasping wheeze. "I took your empire! I took your father! I locked you in a wheelchair to rot! How are you still standing?!"

Maxwell halted five paces away. His gaze was devoid of hatred; it held only the cold finality of an executioner.

"Because I wasn't alone, Croft," Maxwell said, his deep voice carrying over the storm. "You built an empire on poison, fear, and betrayal. You never understood what people are willing to endure for those they love."

Croft sneered, glaring at Martha. "A housemaid! You traded a billion-dollar shipping dynasty for a common servant!"

"She pulled me out of the grave you dug for me," Maxwell said, taking a step forward. "And she’s going to watch you return to it."

Desperate, Croft hoisted the titanium case over the edge of the yawning chasm behind him.

"Shoot me, and Centraline dies with me!" Croft screamed. "You’ll never have the master culture to synthesize a permanent vaccine!"

Martha stepped up beside Maxwell, her face calm and unyielding. "I analyzed the blood of the dockworkers, Croft. Your synthesis is flawed. High-dose atropine combined with normal human antibodies neutralizes the compound entirely. Your master weapon is a failure of medical science. That case is nothing but trash."

Croft froze. The realization that his ultimate leverage was worthless shattered the last vestige of his sanity.

With a feral shriek, he pulled a compact pistol from his pocket, aiming directly at Martha’s heart.

BANG.

Maxwell’s shot shattered Croft’s wrist before his finger could squeeze the trigger. In the same breath, Maxwell closed the gap like a lightning strike. A crushing palm strike shattered Croft’s sternum, sending the titanium case tumbling into the snow.

Maxwell’s combat boot came down on the case’s hinges, cracking the seal. Martha stepped forward, pouring a bottle of concentrated laboratory acid over the culture vials, dissolving the deadly pathogens into smoking, black sludge.

Croft collapsed against the guardrail, coughing up blood, staring up at the towering silhouette of the man he had tried to destroy.

"Kill me..." Croft wheezed. "End it, Vance..."

Maxwell slowly holstered his weapon.

"Death is too clean for you, Julian," Maxwell said, his voice as cold as the surrounding granite. "Elena Harris and an Interpol tactical detachment are five minutes behind us. You will stand trial before the international tribunal. You will be stripped of every dime, every name, every scrap of power. And you will spend the rest of your life in an eight-by-eight cell... completely alone."

The thrum of heavy transport rotors echoed up the Argentine valley. Floodlights swept over the pass, illuminating the broken Architect huddled in the snow.

Maxwell turned his back on him, took Martha’s freezing hand, and pulled her into his arms, shielding her from the biting wind.
