Chapter 22 - I regain overnights

Eight weeks became ten.

Then the family court reviewed.

Claire testified that I had cooperated.

The independent evaluator confirmed the residence safety plan.

No Vanessa access.

No evidence I personally harmed Noah.

My overnight parenting time resumed gradually.

First one night.

Then two.

Then normal schedule adjusted slightly to give Claire more weekday contact.

I accepted.

The first night Noah slept at my house again, he carried Other Blue.

Captain Blue was still evidence.

He stood at the top of the stairs.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Outside cage gone?”

Police had released it after processing.

I had not destroyed it.

My lawyer stopped me when I wanted to.

Instead it sat in secure storage pending final disposition.

I answered:

“Not in the yard.”

“No cage?”

“No cage for you. Ever.”

He looked at me.

“Bad kids cage?”

“No.”

“What bad kids do?”

There.

A three-year-old trying to understand moral architecture.

I sat on the floor.

“Kids make bad choices sometimes.”

“Then cage?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Adults help them make a better choice.”

He thought.

“Quiet chair?”

“Sometimes a short quiet time can help if you’re upset.”

“Food?”

“You still get food.”

He nodded.

Then walked to bed.

That conversation mattered more than every policy memo I signed.

Boundaries survived.

May you like

Humiliation did not.
