Chapter 24 - Claire and I become better ex-spouses

People assumed crisis would reunite us.
It did not.
Claire had a boyfriend by then.
Daniel Hart.
Emergency physician.
Nice man.
Annoyingly calm.
I disliked him for three months because he was good at everything.
Then Noah liked him.
I adjusted.
Claire and I became better co-parents because we stopped treating information as territory.
If Noah said something strange at my house:
I texted Claire.
If preschool reported behavior:
Both received it.
Caregiver changes:
Both approved.
No asking Noah to carry messages.
No competing over who was the safer parent.
I apologized directly.
“I should have asked you before giving Vanessa disciplinary authority.”
Claire said:
“Yes.”
“I thought because we were engaged—”
“I know.”
“I was wrong.”
“Yes.”
I waited.
“That’s all?”
“What do you want?”
“Forgiveness speech.”
“No.”
Fair.
Then she said:
“You’re fixing it.”
That was enough.
Later she apologized too.
“For what?”
“When I filed for temporary custody, part of me wanted you to feel what I felt.”
“Meaning?”
“Powerless.”
I looked at her.
“Did that affect the filing?”
“No. I still think Noah needed to stay with me.”
“So?”
“I’m telling you because motive can be mixed.”
There.
We had both learned the language.
Actions can be correct even when emotions inside them are messy.

The job is noticing which part drives the decision.
