Chapter 8 - Claire’s anger at me

Claire waited until Noah was asleep.
Then came to my house.
Not for reconciliation.
For war.
She stood in my study.
“You gave Vanessa authority over him.”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“I don’t know.”
“Wrong answer.”
I looked down.
She continued:
“Could she discipline him?”
“I assumed normal discipline.”
“What does that mean?”
“Time-outs. Remove toys. Bedtime decisions.”
“Did you discuss it with me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because she lived here.”
Claire laughed once.
No humor.
“So geography gives parental authority?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
I had no good answer.
Vanessa was going to be my wife.
I had wanted Noah to accept her as family before the wedding.
I told myself household authority would help.
I let her:
Coordinate caregiver schedules.
Approve meals.
Handle preschool transportation.
Set afternoon routines.
Correct behavior.
I never gave permission for cages.
Obviously.
But the question Claire asked was harder.
“What limits did you give her?”
I thought.
“I told her no physical punishment.”
“What else?”
Nothing written.
Nothing specific.
I had assumed reasonable adults share definitions.
That was lazy.
Claire said:
“You chose someone to become his stepmother and acted like the title came with automatic expertise.”
She was right.
“Did Noah ever tell you he was afraid?”
I remembered.
Two weeks earlier:
“Vanessa mad when Daddy work.”
I answered:
“Everybody gets mad sometimes.”
Another:
“Can Mommy house wedding day?”
I thought he was overwhelmed by fittings.
Another:
“Blue come dinner?”
Vanessa had said toys were not allowed at the table.
I enforced it.
Noah cried.
I thought:
toddler boundary.
Maybe it was.
Not every old memory became abuse.
But I had not asked enough.
Claire said:
“I want him with me full time temporarily.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
She stared.
“You’re not fighting?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I need to make my house safe before I ask him to sleep in it again.”
Her anger softened by one degree.
Not forgiveness.
May you like
Enough.
