Chapter 7 - The first recordings

Police did not let me watch everything immediately.

Good.

When my attorney eventually obtained copies through the criminal discovery process and family proceedings, I watched only with counsel and a child-safety specialist.

I wanted to binge every second.

Bad idea.

The recordings covered parts of four days.

Fragmented.

Battery-saving motion activation.

No audio.

No complete timeline.

Day one.

Noah in his bedroom.

Vanessa stands in the doorway.

Points toward bed.

Noah shakes his head.

She removes his toy truck and leaves.

Could be ordinary discipline.

Day two.

Breakfast room.

Noah reaches for food.

Vanessa moves the plate farther away.

Points toward a chair.

He sits.

Seven minutes later she returns food.

Not abuse by itself.

Day three.

Hallway.

Noah tries to walk around Vanessa.

She blocks him twice.

Then grips his shoulders and turns him toward a wall.

No striking.

Day four.

Backyard.

This one mattered.

Vanessa dragging the old dog cage across the lawn.

Noah visible behind glass doors.

Captain Blue camera image shakes as he carries the bear.

Vanessa opens the cage.

Points inside.

Noah backs away.

She takes his wrist.

The image moves abruptly because Noah drops the teddy.

Recording continues from the mud.

Vanessa guides—then pushes—Noah into the cage.

Closes the door.

Places the metal dog-food bowl inside.

Walks away.

Noah remains visible through bars.

The clip lasted thirty-six minutes before the battery died.

I arrived later.

The camera did not record the entire confinement.

But it established enough.

Vanessa had not:

“placed him there for one second during a tantrum.”

She deliberately prepared the cage.

Placed the bowl.

Closed the door.

Left him.

Then returned to supervise.

The footage contained no sound.

So it could not prove specific words.

Noah’s statements and witnesses had to do that.

Evidence is strongest when pieces support each other instead of one magical recording doing everything.
