Chapter 23 - Captain Blue comes home

After the criminal case resolved, police returned Captain Blue.

The camera had been removed and retained according to evidence procedures until no longer necessary.

The teddy looked terrible.

Mud stains.

Side seam cut.

One missing plastic eye.

Claire asked:

“Do we give it back?”

Noah was four by then.

We asked him.

“Blue broken.”

“Yes.”

“Fix?”

“We can.”

“Camera?”

“Gone.”

“Vanessa find camera.”

My stomach tightened.

“Yes.”

He remembered.

Not every detail.

Enough.

We sent Captain Blue to a toy-restoration specialist.

Not secretly.

Noah chose fabric patches.

A new eye.

The restorer did not make him look new.

One blue patch remained visible along the side.

When the bear came back, Noah stared.

Then hugged him.

For six days.

On the seventh, Captain Blue stayed on the shelf while Noah slept with Other Blue instead.

I asked nothing.

Months later he rotated both.

Recovery did not require loyalty to the object that exposed abuse.

The camera itself eventually became irrelevant.

People still referred to:

“the teddy-bear case.”

I hated that.

The teddy did not save Noah alone.

Molly noticed.

Anna called police.

Claire challenged me.

Doctors documented.

Investigators authenticated.

Noah spoke.

Systems finally listened.
