Chapter 22 - Dad Stops Calling Me “Kiddo”

For months after Easter, Dad became overprotective.

Where are you?

Who are you with?

Text when you arrive.

Text when you leave.

Do you want me to drive?

Do you want me to come inside?

At first I loved it.

Then I couldn’t breathe.

One evening I said:

“Dad, stop.”

His face fell.

“What?”

“You’re doing it too.”

“Doing what?”

“Acting like safety means you make every decision.”

That hurt him.

Good fathers can still get things wrong.

He sat.

“I’m sorry.”

Then:

“What do you want from me?”

“Ask.”

So he did.

Need a ride?

Sometimes no.

Want me at court?

Sometimes yes.

Want advice?

Frequently no.

Our relationship improved because he learned protection without command.

Maybe retirement had not taught him everything.

Neither had fatherhood.

We both kept learning.
