Chapter 6 - The Search Warrant

Police did not simply kick down the locked-room door because it looked suspicious.

The house was secured.

Ethan was removed from the immediate area.

Detectives obtained a warrant based on:

My statement.

The exterior lock.

The passport visible on the live camera.

The suitcase.

The domestic assault.

Ethan’s contradictory explanation.

And other evidence gathered at the scene.

The room was opened that evening.

Grant was not the lead detective.

But he later told Dad what they found.

The suitcase contained clothing for approximately one week.

All mine.

Sleepwear.

Underwear.

Sweaters.

Jeans.

Shoes.

Toiletries.

My prescription allergy medication.

No items belonging to Ethan.

The second phone was new.

Prepaid.

Configured but barely used.

On it were unsent drafts.

One read:

Dad, I’m safe. I need time away and I don’t want anyone looking for me.

Another:

I’m checking into a private program. Please respect my decision.

I had written neither.

Dad read those lines later and had to leave the room.

There were also printed forms.

A voluntary intake packet for a private wellness facility several states away.

My name filled in.

My date of birth.

Insurance.

Emergency contact:

Margaret Caldwell.

My husband was not listed.

My father was not listed.

Most importantly:

The signature line contained something that looked like my signature.
