Chapter 26 - Easter Again

Three years after the assault, Easter fell unusually early.

I hosted lunch.

Dad.

Caroline.

Mia.

Two neighbors.

A man named Luke I had been dating for seven months.

No wedding plans.

No urgency.

I wore flats.

Not because heels reminded me of Ethan.

Because my feet hurt.

Freedom sometimes looks aggressively uncinematic.

Dad brought flowers.

Then asked:

“Where do you want these?”

Progress.

Luke brought dessert.

Terrible.

We ate it anyway.

Someone knocked over the Easter basket.

Chocolate rolled across the floor.

Everyone froze for one tiny second because they knew the story.

I started laughing.

Mia laughed next.

Then Dad.

We picked everything up.

No one treated the basket like a relic.

That was exactly what I wanted.
