Chapter 24 - Margaret’s Letter

Two years after Easter, Margaret sent a letter through lawyers.
I was given the choice.
I read it.
Emily,
I knew Ethan had hurt you before Easter.
Direct.
That was more honesty than I expected.
I told myself your marriage was private and that intervening would make things worse.
Then:
When I saw your injuries that day, I was afraid Richard would involve police and Ethan’s life would be destroyed.
She continued:
I helped Ethan prepare the lake house and the messages because I believed several quiet days would give everyone time to calm down.
Then:
I understand now that I was helping remove your ability to choose.
Yes.
Finally:
I am sorry that protecting my son became more important to me than protecting the woman he was hurting.
I folded the letter.
No reply.
No reunion.
