Chapter 8 - The Lake House

The Caldwell family owned a lake property three hours north.
Remote.
Not wilderness.
But isolated enough that neighbors could not see the house from the road.
I had been there twice.
Margaret loved it.
I did not.
Weak cell reception.
Long gravel drive.
Too quiet.
Ethan’s navigation history showed the route repeatedly during the previous week.
His calendar contained:
Easter – north house.
No invitation had been sent to me.
Margaret’s messages to Ethan were more revealing.
Saturday:
Have you packed what she needs?
Ethan:
Most of it.
Margaret:
Phone?
Ethan:
Handled.
Then:
We only need a few days for her to calm down.
Margaret:
And for her face to clear.
That sentence became central.
My bruises were not accidental in Margaret’s mind.
She knew.
Another message:
Richard cannot see her like this.
Ethan:
He won’t.
Margaret:
Once she understands what public accusations will do to both families, she’ll cooperate.
I read that at my father’s house three days later.
My hands went numb.

Margaret had not merely watched abuse.
She had helped design the cleanup afterward.
