Chapter 10 - The result

Independent testing was done through an accredited relationship laboratory.

Maddie’s sample was collected with my consent.

Grant participated too because the lab wanted broader kinship interpretation.

Lucas participated.

No Evelyn.

No home kit.

No television reveal.

The result did not call Lucas:

father

in a legal sense.

It established biological relationship.

The probability that Lucas was Maddie’s biological father rather than an unrelated tested man exceeded 99.99 percent.

Given Grant and Lucas were first cousins, the laboratory performed additional marker analysis to distinguish close-family relatedness.

Lucas matched as the biological paternal contributor.

Grant did not.

We already knew that.

Maddie was biologically related to the Bennett family.

Just not through Grant.

I sat alone in Amanda’s conference room with the report.

The irony was so ugly I almost laughed.

Evelyn had spent five years looking at Maddie as if she were less Bennett.

Maddie had Bennett ancestry after all.

But that did not make the deception better.

It made Evelyn’s obsession more visible.

Grant came in later.

Read the result.

Said nothing for a long time.

Then:

“Lucas.”

“Yes.”

He covered his face.

“Did he know?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because everyone else’s biology is not obligated to participate in your mother’s plan.”

He looked at me.

“That was cruel.”

“Yes.”

I was angry.

That did not make cruelty accurate.

I apologized.

Progress would not happen in a straight line.
